Worker Bitten By Shark!

An aquarium worker has been bitten by an Angel Shark also known as a Monkfish. The 23-year-old staff diver of the Deep Sea Aquarium in North Queensferry suffered between 15 and 20 lacerations, of which were about a centimetre long, in the attack.

The wounds were dressed by paramedics and he was later released. Deep Sea World has begun an investigation into the incident.

The angel shark or a monkfish is an ambush predator that lies and waits for its unsuspecting prey to venture close enough before making its attack.

Undersea Explorers and Snorkel Safaris

The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust are keen to strengthen and enhance its existing marine awareness programme by developing two new, inspirational and dynamic activities which allow people to engage with their local marine development.

The first activity is called Undersea Explorers which is a pool based snorkel programme with simulated undersea landscapes. This group is aimed at young groups such as scouts and guides where they are able to use swimming pools across the region to to simulate their undersea landscapes and wildlife in the North Sea. The children can get involved in educational activities and games which provide a practical way of learning. Additional benefits of this programme include, building confidence in water, snorkel skills, team building and leadership.

The Second activity is the Snorkelling Safari. These are run in the spring and summer so it maybe something to look into for next year. The programme is open to families and young people aged ten and above. The main aim of the Snorkel Safari is to engage people in their local marine environment and promote good stewardship of it. Children must have parental consent and be able to provide medical information. Boat cover, a beach base, radio contact and in-water Marshalls would be provided so you can be confident that your children will be safe.

Simply Snorkel welcome the Fuji FinePix J15 Camera and Housing with open arms! This camera is easy to use and is suitable for taking anywhere but with the housing it allows you to take images whilst snorkelling.

The J15 has 8.2 megapixels, a 3 x optical zoom and ISO 1600 light sensitivity. It is incredibly easy to use and the Graphical User Interface helps take the guesswork out of selecting a camera setting. The Camera and Housing package also include a 2GB SD Card for extra memory storage.

The housing is robust and provides protection down to a depth of 3 metres whilst also keeping dirt, mud and sand out. A secure latch locks the camera safely inside which prevents it being opened accidentally.

1000 people dress up in Gorilla costumes and go ape for the day in order to save the last 700 mountain gorillas left in the wild.

Paticipants have to run or jog 7km around London, passing famous landmarks like London Bridge and the Tate Modern.

Leicester Scouts Go Bog Snorkelling!

Well done to the Leicester Scouts who completed the World Bog Snorkelling Championships on August 31st in Wales.

The Scouts weren’t put off by the rain which made the bog even muddier. They stood proud in their BSAC T-Shirts and gave it their snorkelling all to complete the course; a 2 metre wide trench, waist deep and 60 metres long cut through a bog. The challenge is to snorkel the 60 metres of the bog and back again as fast as you can.

If you think it sounds easy, it isn’t. The medal at the end is truly deserved.

It’s a fun challenge which attracts a lot of participants and spectators. You can even do it in fancy dress if you like!

How to Skin Dive

Here are some basic safety tips when snorkelling. Stick by these and you will have a more pleasurable snorkel, and the underwater life will be thankful you respected their homes!

Don’t Paddle or throw things in the rock pool
– remember it’s a creatures home!
Always put rocks back in the same place and
way up that they were found.
Be very gentle with animals, and if you pick them up, return them carefully to their place.
Don’t take any living things away with you.
Don’t pull seaweed off the rocks.
Don’t try to kick or pull limpets off the rocks.
Don’t frighten seabirds – give them some space.
Always take you litter home with you.
Take your time, don’t rush or run about.
Keep an eye on the tide so you don’t get cut off .
Don’t get too close to the cliffs.
Keep away from the soft mud and quicksand.
Wash your hands before you put your fingers
in your mouth or eat anything.

This device can be attached to keys, gps units, cameras, PDA's, Mobile phones, radio receives, fishing tackle, portable radios. Really anything thats under 1kg in weight.

If you drop an item WaterBuoy is attached to WaterBuoy will self inflate an internal balloon bringing your dropped item to the surface, it will then flash a beacon light showing you where your missing item is which can be seen up to 250 metres away.

Tested - AquaPac

On Monday night I got the opportunity to test an AquaPac camera bag at our local swimming pool which has a depth of 3.5m at the deep end. I can say that its a great value product.

We used the version with a hard lens (shown here) for around an hour, down to the bottom of the pool and not a drop of water entered the case, neither did any condensation build up.

Only downside to the case is that you have to be careful about the edge of the lens section or it will appear in your picture (as shown in the video below).

Overall I think a great product for the money.

Artificial reefs sounds like a good idea. Simply take a tanker or navy ship and dump it off the coast. This would otherwise add to our nations heap of trash. Once in the water fish and sea creatures will colonize the structure creating an artificial reef. And before long, the replenished ecosystem will fuel an economic boon of recreational fishing and diving.

This idea of artificial reefs isn't new, there are literally thousands of them around the world. But as artificial-reef initiatives grow to include more coastal regions and a wider array of aged infrastructure, some scientists worry that the commercial interests of fishing, diving and trash disposal are driving efforts that should be environmental. If that's the case, they warn, thriving reefs may ultimately give way to an underwater junkyard.

Ultimately I think artificial reefs are no replacement for natural ecosystems. We'd be getting much more bang for our buck by focusing on the things that we know work. That is, by establishing more marine reserves, which have been proven to restore overfished populations, even if they don't spur the same economic gains that artificial reefs do.

Funky Fins

Every great invention can be traced back to a single moment in time. Matthew and Michelle Lewis had their moment of epiphany while sitting on a beach in the Maldives, soaking up the sights: ‘Every day Matthew had the pleasure of watching these gorgeous Italian girls come to the beach in yet another glamorous swimsuit or fabulous bikini. Then they would go swimming and put on such boring fins. I started thinking how great it would be if they had fins to complement their swimsuits’, explains Michelle.

The idea floated around her head for a few days and then she picked up a glossy magazine and saw a picture of Liz Hurley: ‘There she was in a drop-dead pink bikini with some horrible fluorescent fins. I took one look and thought, she should have clear ones with pink flowers inside’.

At that moment fashion history was born. The Funky Fin.

Taking The Plunge In Britain's Pools

Can you believe this image was taken in Britain? Taken just of the Isle Of Sykes this image looks almost too perfect to be the UK, however there are literally hundreds of beautiful spots to snorkel in the UK this summer. For more see the BBC's in news pictures here.

UK Shore Spotters Guide To Starfish

There are many species of starfish living in British waters, here is a quick guide on spotting and identifying them.

	Bloody Henry Marks: A vivid purple creature with orange arm tips (up to 30cm in diameter). Seen: On lower shores around the UK, especially where waves and currents are stronger. Fact: Less predatory than other starfish, it feeds on materials and can catch from floating plankton.
Common Brittlestar Marks: Its thin, fragile arms can break if handled. Up to 25cm, its usually dark brown, but may be yellow or black. Seen: Usually found in deep water. Fact: Up to 1,500 per square meter may gather to catch plankton.
	Common Starfish Marks: Familiar five armed shape and orange in colour are unmistakable. It can grow to 30cm though usually is smaller. Seen: On lower shores around the UK. Fact: A voracious carnivore, it prises open its mussel pray and then secretes digestive juices into its unfortunate meal.
Common Sun Star Marks: This bulky starfish is a striking orange or red with pale stripes and can grow to 35cm. Seen: Only in deeper waters, worth taking up Scuba diving to see. Fact: This star usually has 13 arms!
	Cushion Star Marks: Similar to the common starfish but with shorter arms. Up to 5cm. Seen: This species is common especially in the south and west, under boulders. Make sure you replace rocks as you find them. Fact: While the adults are quite drab, summer juveniles are dazzlingly bright.
Spiny Starfish Marks: It is one of the biggest starfish growing up to 80cm. Ivory white in colour, it has large, blunt spines. Seen: In gulleys and pools on the lowest shores, especially on western and southern coasts. Fact: Its spines can be jettisoned to aid escape and can re-grow later.

The snorkel has a superb water purge system which keeps surface water out while maintaining excellent unobstructed airflow. Overall a brilliant set with some nice features which comes in a handy rucksack.

Thoughts...

After reviewing the various sets I would say that the Cozumel set was certainly best value for money, with the Pluma bag being of the best quality. Therefore snorkelling holidays I would recommend the Cozumel set, whereas for people who have tried and enjoyed snorkelling before we would recommend the Pluma Bag.

Atomics New Snorkel Range

Atomic have just released a new range of Snorkels, the SV (Scupper valve) range consists of 2 snorkels the SV1 and SV2 which are available in a range of colours, designed to compliment Atomics excellent masks and fins.

When the diver clears the SV1/SV2 a small watertight tube located inside the snorkel body keeps the breathing airway path free of collected water droplets. The one way valve or Scupper Valve simply allows water to drain into a lower reservoir each time the diver exhales. The result is a crisp clearing, hydrodynamic, snorkel without being big, bulky, and uncomfortable to use.

SV1 & SV2:

How it works.

The Scupper Valve inside the SV snorkel series works in the same way as the Scupper Valve on a boat. An internal tube (1) located inside the main snorkel body retains a small one way Scupper Flap Valve (2) that allows water to flow past the mouthpiece and out the purge valve, (3) without collecting at the bottom of the breathing passage. The diver simply exhales a small burst of air to clear any water trapped below the mouthpiece, keeping the internal tube airway dry. It’s so simple and so effective, we have a Patent Pending.

SV2:

High performance design with a Semi-Dry top.

The SV2 combines the Scupper Valve lower section with the sleek looking SV2 Semi-Dry top. The SV2 Semi-Dry top horizontal vents (1) diffuse splashed water (2) that would normally freely enter the snorkel top. The small gaps between the vanes of the vent restrict water speed and droplet size and permit most of the splashed water to exit the special vents (3) without entering the breathing tube. Thus you get less water in your snorkel. The SV2 is the perfect answer for rough or choppy water conditions.

Kimmeridge Snorkel Trail Dorset

Simply Snorkel are happy to announce they are sponsoring the Kimmeridge snorkel trail for 2008. Kimmeridge is an ideal place for snorkelling, Kimmeridge bay has been open since 2006, so although its not exactly a new attraction its well worth while to take a look. Maximum depth of around 2 metres makes it an ideal place for snorkelling. There are many different species of weed and kelp, along with a variety of fish, including wrasse and blennies. This snorkel trail is only available in the summer months and we would recommend going if you can.
